$Three vehicles were involved in an accident during snowy conditions about 2:40 pm October 15, at the intersection of South Main Street and Ethan Allen Road. Ryan Zitnay, 17, of 58 Parmalee Hill Road was driv-ing a 1999 Ford Ranger pickup truck southward on South Main Street, as motorist Amalia Caggiano, 87, of Nunnawauk Road, was driving a 1999 Saturn sedan northward on South Main Street. At that time, trucker Nicholas Caruso, 24, of 27 Bennetts Bridge Road, who was driving a 2006 GMC garbage truck, was stopped at a stop sign on westbound Ethan Allen Road at its intersection with South Main Street, police said. The Ford then attempted to make a left turn onto Ethan Allen Road, but it was struck by the ap-proaching Saturn. That impact caused the Ford’s rear bumper to be pushed into the windshield of the garbage truck. Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps staffers transported Caggiano to Danbury Hospital to be treated for injuries. Zitnay and Caruso received medical treatment at the scene. A 16-year-old boy was driving a 2005 Saturn Vue westward on Alberts Hill Road about 2 am on October 17, when the vehicle went off the road’s right shoulder entered a wooded area, struck a tree, and then overturned. All four teenage occupants were able to exit the vehicle, police said. The driver received chest and neck injuries from the vehicle’s seatbelt. A 15-year-old male rear-seat passenger received facial, head, and shoulder injuries said. Newtown am-bulance volunteers transported both the driver and that passenger to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries. The two other passengers, who are a 14-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl, left the accident scene before emergency personnel arrived, police said. Both passengers were later located and had received minor injuries in the crash, police said. Sandy Hook firefighters responded to the accident. The driver was driving the vehicle with a learner’s permit and without the required supervision of a licensed driver, police said. Police withheld the identity of the driver because he is under age 18. The accident is under investigation and enforcement is pending. (Hicks photo)
