A Hawleyville firefighter directs traffic during the evening rush on April 12 at the Exit 9 on-ramp for westbound Interstate 84, following a one-vehicle accident there that caused travel delays in the area. State police said that Peter K. Rolf, 64, of Bethel was driving a 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 truck, shown behind the firefighter, on the ramp at about 4:53 pm, when Rolf lost control of the truck and struck several road signs. Rolf failed field sobriety tests and was charged with driving under the influence, state police said. Rolf was not injured in the incident, but was transported by Newtown ambulance volunteers to Danbury Hospital for a medical evaluation due to his intoxication. State police said Rolf was released from custody on $500 bail for a May 2 appearance in Danbury Superior Court. (Gorosko photo)

According to the Yale School of Medicine, motorcycle crashes involving riders without helmets like this crash in Sandy Hook in 2010 contribute to increased fatalities and injuries that likely cost billions of dollars in hospital and rehabilitation bills. The goal of the study was to assess the association of helmet use with motorcycle crash mortality and to identify characteristics of those riders who were involved in Connecticut crashes. Plans for The Victory Garden for FAITH, which will grow fresh food for clients of FAITH Food Pantry, took a large step forward this week when the Parks & Recreation Commission voted to support the project and its mission. The project has also received approval from the first selectman, land use director, and Fairfield Hills Authority.
