Firefighters from all five of the town’s volunteer fire companies took part in their annual holiday-season food drive for the needy, which was held outside two local supermarkets on Saturday, November 20. The combined efforts resulted in the donation of 73 turkeys, and 128 storage boxes of food items, as well as $1,500 in the form of supermarket gift cards and cash. The collected items were delivered by firefighters to FAITH Food Pantry in Sandy Hook. By the end of this week, the tags for Newtown Junior Women’s Club 2010 Tag-A-Gift pro-gram will be available at Newtown Savings Bank on Main Street and in the Sand Hill Plaza, Wesley Learning Center in Sandy Hook, and at Union Savings Bank (Church Hill Road at Commerce Road.) From left, Newtown Savings Bank Assistant Vice President Brian Amey, Newtown Savings Bank Assistant Branch Manager for Sand Hill Plaza Katie Smith, and Newtown Junior Women’s Club members Ruth Brassard and Christine Grabowski stand with a wreath that will go on display at the Main Street Newtown Savings Bank location. Each year, the club collects toys that have been requested by children in town whose parents could use some help filling Christmas wishes, and each ornament has a corresponding gift request on it. Members of the Masons, based at Hiram Lodge #18 in Sandy Hook, conducted a public service event last month at the Nunnawauk Meadows senior citizens housing complex on Nunnawauk Road. The Masons delivered free coffee and doughnuts to some residents at the complex as part of their Newtown Seniors Appreciation Day program.
