Those in the know wisely filled the narthex of Newtown Meeting House on Main Street 20 minutes before members of The Garden Club of Newtown opened its doors for the Annual Christmas Greens Sale, at 9 am, Saturday, December 7. Within 15 minutes of being welcomed into the building, more than half of the 75 hand-decorated wreaths had been claimed by shoppers. “I come every year,” said Kelly Urso, below, showing off the wreath she had selected, “and I try to get here right at 9 am.” The display of holiday decorations, crafted by the Garden Club members from mostly local and natural materials, included grapevine trees adorned with twinkling lights, tabletop boxwood trees, handmade bows, sprays of white pine and juniper, birch suet bird feeders, and centerpieces of greens tucked into baskets of all shapes and sizes. Hand painted ornaments and elaborately frosted cookies made by Joyce DeWolfe attracted the attention of many browsing the selections, as did the softball-sized ornaments covered in acorn caps and dangling from raffia ribbons. A wreath and a holly tree were the first treas-ures Barbara Myers found, making her way up and down the crowded aisles. Julie Amoony visited the sale for the first time, and was amazed by the selection and reasonable prices. “I couldn’t believe it. It’s beautiful!” exclaimed Ms Amoony, a common observation of dozens of the shoppers present. (Crevier photo)
