Since 11 pm on Friday, December 28, and into the predawn hours of December 29, town crews cleared the accumulation of gifts, poems, toys, stuffed animals, candles, and more that flooded Sandy Hook in an outpouring of grief and support. At approximately 3:30 am on Saturday, the Sandy Hook School memorial site near the Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire Company garage on Riverside Road, which included decorated Christmas trees, had been cleared and town personnel had begun work in Sandy Hook Center. As the new day approached, just a few men remained to reclaim sidewalks near The Glen at the corner of Church Hill Road and Washington Avenue, and adjoining areas where the memorial offerings had spread. With a row of large industrial packing boxes quickly filling, the crew moved bundles of toys and animals, placing them in waiting boxes. (Bobowick photo)
