One of Newtown’s first attempts to try and divert the attention of especially young children from the emotional aftereffects of the Sandy Hook School shooting appeared to be a great success, as representatives of the Woodcock Nature Center of Darien volunteered to entertain little ones and their parents with a number of live animals on display at the Booth Library on December 22. Center director Henryk Teraszkiewicz and Woodcock staffer Allison Ericson kept dozens of children entertained with critters, including a huge spotted salamander and a native box tortoise. ![Middle Gate student Jennah Guarna created a special poster to hang on her front door on December 15. With help from some friends (“They helped me with a lot of the stickers,” the 7-year-old said), Jenna put the words “We Pray For Sandy Hook” on a piece of white poster board using red letter stickers, and then filled the remaining space with hearts, flowers, smiley faces, flowers, and countless animals. “I made it because some of the kids, they were all nice. One of my friends had two friends on the swim team who passed away [on December 14]. I thought I would make a poster to cheer her up,” said Jennah. “When she saw this after I finished it, she had a big smile. I want everyone to smile. I want Newtown to smile again.” Her sign, said mom Joanna, has been hung on the front door of their home.
