Sandy Hook firefighters worked to extricate two women from a 200 Mercury Sable following a one-car accident on Interstate 84 West on the afternoon of January 20, in which the vehicle they were traveling went off the westbound lanes of highway and traveled down a ravine in the highway median, landing in a stream. On the morning of January 21, driver Cheryl Ann Peters, 63, of Seymour was good condition, and her mother, passenger Charlotte Peters, 87, of Oxford was in fair condition, a hospital spokeswoman said. Ms Peters was driving the sedan westward on I-84 in the right lane of three lanes, in the area between the Bancroft Road overpass and the Philo Curtis Road overpass, at about 4 pm, when the vehicle went out of control and then collided with steel guardcabling on the left road shoulder. The vehicle then went down a steep embankment. Firefighters removed parts of the vehicle to free the women from the wreckage. The incident was complicated by its location in a stream at the base of the ravine, said Sandy Hook Chief Bill Halstead. Sandy Hook and Hook & Ladder firefighters responded to the accident, as did Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and the paramedic. Although the accident involved the wetbound lanes of traffic, I-84 East was affected by rubberneckers, as can be seen in the upper portion of this photo. (Hicks photo)
