Three vehicles were involved in an accident during snowy conditions about 2:40 pm October 15, at the intersection of South Main Street and Ethan Allen Road. Ryan Zitnay, 17, of 58 Parmalee Hill Road was driving a 1999 Ford Ranger pickup truck southward on South Main Street, as motorist Amalia Caggiano, 87, of Nunnawauk Road, was driving a 1999 Saturn sedan northward on South Main Street. At that time, trucker Nicholas Caruso, 24, of 27 Bennetts Bridge Road, who was driving a 2006 GMC garbage truck, was stopped at a stop sign on westbound Ethan Allen Road at its intersection with South Main Street, police said. The Ford then attempted to make a left turn onto Ethan Allen Road, but it was struck by the approaching Saturn. That impact caused the Ford’s rear bumper to be pushed into the windshield of the garbage truck. Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps staffers transported Caggiano to Danbury Hospital to be treated for injuries. Zitnay and Caruso received medical treatment at the scene. Zitnay received an infraction for making a restricted turn. Botsford and Hook & Ladder firefighters responded to the accident. (Gorosko photo)
