Newtown Volunteer Nurse Association (VNA) board member Rebecca Smith holds a patch over the eye of 3-year-old Mason Moody, Thursday, March 29, at the Children’s Adventure Center, as she assesses his visual acuity. Certified VNA members provide eye screening for children in several Newtown preschools each spring and summer, working through the Prevent Blindness Tri-State program. The local VNA has provided this service for more than 20 years, and has successfully identified numerous 3-year-olds who can benefit from a follow-up eye exam by a professional. According to Ms Smith, one in 20 preschoolers may have a vision problem. The free eye screening is one of many health screenings the Newtown VNA provides to the community. (Crevier photo)
