The driver of a New Jersey-based New Century Transportation, Inc, tractor-trailer truck learned about 10:50 am on Friday, April 13, that the geometry of the Toddy Hill Road-Berkshire Road intersection in Sandy Hook is tough, especially when hauling a 53-foot-long trailer over the sharp grade at that sharply angled fork in the road. The driver attempted to make a hard right turn from northbound Toddy Hill Road onto eastbound Berkshire Road, but the retracted landing legs on the trailer got jammed onto the pavement, lifting the trailer’s right rear wheels off the ground, thus immobilizing the vehicle. Police halted through-traffic on Berkshire Road between its intersections with Toddy Hill Road and Pole Bridge Road until repair crews could free the truck about an hour after it had gotten stuck.
