Employees of Wilton-based The LaurelRock Company spent Friday, April 20, in Newtown, where they worked on a pair of beautification projects for its annual Planet Day of Service contribution. One crew was sent to Fairfield Hills, where members installed a much-needed irrigation system for The Victory Garden, while a second crew spent four hours at Newtown Congregational Church. From left is designer Allan Broadbent, administrative team member Ashley Cipollone, garden manager Nick Moraske, designer Dan Blackman, production manager Sean Ragan, LaurelRock President Burt DeMarche, and field supervisor Wilton Franco. This team spent their afternoon refreshing the gardens of the West Street church. The area to the immediate north of the church building, where the group was standing for this photo, was filled with good soil to help improve the grade as well as anchor the plant-ings, and then peonies, “Bridal veil” astilbe, black-eyed Susans, vinca and snow mount spirea were all planted. “For a lot of people who don’t always get to go out, this is a fun day for them,” said Mr DeMarche, whose family lives in Newtown. The Planet Day of Service is an annual national lawn and landscape industry event that encourages local professionals to organize volunteer projects in their own communities to beautify the grounds of schools, parks, playgrounds, senior centers, shelters and anywhere people enjoy green spaces.
