Two motorists who were traveling in opposite directions on Interstate 84, just west of the Bancroft Road overpass, were involved in an accident at about 8:08 am on May 18. The crash involved a SUV and a coupe. The identities of the drivers were not available from state police before the deadline for this edition of The Bee. Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company Chief Bill Halstead, who responded to the scene with firefighters, said that had the angle of impact been more frontal, the crash could have been much more serious. Both drivers were transported to Danbury Hospital by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps as a precautionary measure. One of the two vehicles, which had been traveling in the left lane of three lanes on westbound I-84, reportedly braked for traffic conditions and then went into a skid, after which that vehicle drove across the grassy highway median, colliding with the other vehicle, which was traveling on eastbound I-84. Both vehicles went into spins after the collision. (Gorosko photo)
