This 17-foot-long Phantom fiberglass pleasure boat was heavily damaged in a boating accident that occurred on the evening of Sunday, June 9, on the Lake Zoar section of the Housatonic River, just downriver of Shepaug Dam. In the incident, two men who were traveling on the boat reportedly ventured too close to the hydroelectric dam’s floodgate, which was discharging water, and the boat then sunk. The two men reportedly escaped injury. Newtown Underwater Search And Rescue (NUSAR), volunteer firefighters from the Sandy Hook and the Newtown Hook & Ladder fire companies, Newtown police, Southbury police, and the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) responded to the scene. The boat was retrieved from Lake Zoar on the morning of Tuesday, June 11, several miles downstream at the Riverside section. DEEP spokesman Dwayne Gardner said June 13 that DEEP Conservation Officer Michael Curran will be interviewing boat owner/operator Tim Hoeffel of Newtown in investigating the incident. (Gorosko photo)
