With its peeling paint, broken windows, and overall gloomy look, Stamford Hall at Fairfield Hills needed just one last touch to become downright spooky: Vultures! Now it has them. This summer, a colony of turkey vultures has settled into the open upper reaches of the deteriorating brick building, which is awaiting demolition. The open half-round window at the peak of the Greek Revival façade has become a favored roosting place for the birds, as has the brick chimney. The building seems so commodious, and the scavenging so good on nearby roadways and fields, that it is likely that the vultures will stay for a while — at least through Halloween. (Clark photo)
