An early issue helmet and coat from the first decades of Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Co.’s history was recently returned to the department. A family in Canada had donated the items to its local fire department, who in turn traced the protective gear to one of Newtown’s fire companies. The mystery that remains is how these items made their way to Canada in the first place. Sandy Hook firefighters are planning a display that will incorporate these pieces with others they already have in their possession. (Hicks photo)
