Four members of Newtown Lions Club were up early Monday morning, placing 30 flags in the brackets on telephone poles they put into place last year. Seen here are Paul Arneth, holding the ladder, and Wayland Johnson. This is the second year for the Lions Club flags, which line the east side of Main Street from Currituck Road to Glover Avenue. The club invested in three- by five-foot flags for the 2009 summer season, which debuted near the end of August and remained in place until early October. This year the flags are scheduled to remain in place until September 19. Because the flags didn’t weather too badly last year, the Lions were able to use the same set this year. The Lions will return to Main Street this coming weekend, when they raise the large summer flag on the town’s flagpole. (R. Scudder Smith photo)
