At 10:42 am on January 8, Newtown Hook & Ladder and Sandy Hook firefighters responded to Newtown Pharmacy & Surgical at 20 Church Hill Road on a report of an odor of gas in the building. An investigation indicated that a small refrigerator in the pharmacy had malfunctioned, releasing some refrigerant gas into the air, said Hook & Ladder Chief Ray Corbo.
