A motorist driving eastward on Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook Center about 4:40 pm on September 14 noticed that smoke was coming from his 2004 Porsche Cayenne SUV, after which he stopped and exited the burning vehicle at the bridge that crosses above the Pootatuck River. Motorist Kurt Damas of Bay Shore, N.Y., was not injured in the incident. The burning SUV emitted a plume of thick, black smoke. Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company firefighters responded to the scene to extinguish the fire, said Chief Bill Halstead. Besides destroying the SUV, the fire damaged the road pavement, some flower planters, and a nearby lightpost. The incident caused road closures and travel delays in the area during the evening rush.
